How to Shop the Soft Life Edit Smartly: Budgeting, Must-Buy vs. Splurge & Your Capsule Wardrobe

Step 1: Set a number before you open a single shop page

The single biggest change in my shopping was deciding the number first. Pick a seasonal figure you'd genuinely be at peace with — $200, $500, $800, whatever is honest — and split it with the 60/30/10 rule: 60% on foundation pieces you'll wear weekly, 30% on one or two elevated pieces, 10% on the small joyful things (a claw clip, a candle, a lip).

On an $800 fall budget that's $480 foundation, $240 elevated, $80 joy. Write it in your notes app. Then use the bag on the shop pages the way you'd use a fitting room: add everything you're drawn to, look at the running total, and cut back to your number before you check out. Seeing the total in one place is what stops the slow $40-at-a-time drift.

One more rule I never break: a 48-hour hold on anything over $100. If I still want it two days later, it's real. Most of the time it isn't.

Step 2: Cost-per-wear, the only math that matters

Divide the price by the number of times you'll realistically wear it in a year. A $180 wool coat worn four times a week for four months is roughly $2.60 a wear. A $35 sequin top worn twice is $17.50 a wear. The coat is the cheap purchase. This is why 'expensive' and 'not worth it' are completely different things.

Anything under about $3 a wear is a yes for me. Between $3 and $10 it needs to be genuinely beautiful or genuinely needed. Over $10 a wear, it's a costume, and costumes should be borrowed or rented.

Must-buy: spend here first, always

Outerwear. Your coat is the piece everyone sees every single day of winter. This is where I spend most of my foundation budget — a structured wool-blend coat in camel, chocolate, black or plum.

Shoes you walk in. Cheap boots hurt, then die. One good pair of leather-look ankle boots and one clean white sneaker beat five bargain pairs.

Bag that holds your life. A structured tote or medium shoulder bag in a neutral. Not seasonal, not logo-heavy.

Denim and trousers that actually fit your body. Fit is worth paying for; nothing makes an outfit look thrifted faster than the wrong rise.

Skincare basics and fragrance. A cleanser, a sunscreen, a barrier moisturizer, one perfume you're known for. These get used daily — the cost-per-wear is unbeatable.

Splurge (only when the base is done)

Splurges are the 30% — and the rule is that they should be the pieces that make you feel most yourself, not the trend with the most views. Mine, in order: real gold-plated or fine jewelry that doesn't turn, one cashmere or cashmere-blend knit, a silk or satin slip dress, and a signature fragrance.

What I no longer splurge on: trend colors of the season (get those affordably — that's exactly why the purple fall edit is priced the way it is), micro-bags, viral makeup with a six-week shelf life, and anything I first saw fewer than three weeks ago.

A quiet trick: buy the splurge last. Build the foundation, wear it for a month, then you'll know precisely which elevated piece your closet is actually missing instead of guessing.

Then accessories are your personality: gold hoops, a slim necklace, a big scarf, a claw clip, one silk bow. Add a season's color story on top — this fall, plum and lavender — and the same twenty pieces feel brand new.

Order of purchase matters more than people think: coat, boots, denim, two knits, bag. Six things and you're dressed for the whole season. Everything after that is decoration.
