Prep is 90% of whether it lasts
Lifting is almost always a prep problem. Push cuticles back with a metal pusher after a warm soak, trim only loose skin, then file the shape and lightly buff the whole nail to remove shine — you want matte, not thin. Wipe with 91% alcohol and don't touch the nail plate again. Oil, lotion or skin contact between prep and base coat is the number one cause of peeling.
Thin coats, capped edges, full cures
Apply base coat thin and cap the free edge (swipe across the tip). Cure 60 seconds in an LED lamp. Two thin color coats beat one thick one — thick gel wrinkles and doesn't cure through. Cap the edge on every layer. Cure top coat for 60–90 seconds, wipe the sticky layer with alcohol, and finish with cuticle oil.

Removal without wrecking your nails
Never peel gel. File off the top coat with a 180-grit file or, faster, a cordless e-file on low speed. If your nails feel thin, take a week off with a strengthening base coat.
